Chesterton Academy Student Sports Spotlight
By Joanne Alloway
If you've never heard of, tried or watched Ultimate Frisbee, you'll want to watch and play it! But if you are schooled at the Chesterton Academy of Annapolis, (CAA) you can learn it firsthand. The game is over 50 years old, fast-paced like soccer and needs little equipment, other than a Frisbee. Interim Athletic coach, Ian Gill, works with the team after school hours in Severna Park, where there's a growing interest in playing.
CAA competes in a regional high school league called MISAL, that encompasses Washington, D.C. and Southern Maryland, with CAA being the most northern school. In Ultimate Frisbee, they were undefeated in six games, and came in 5th in the State Tournament.
If the flying disk isn't your speed, the CAA also offers coed soccer and the team won two of their six games. In the Spring, track team is popular. In this sport, students can compete in single-gender events in the league.
As the CAA student population increases, there will be additional opportunities for these sports, and possibly others.
